Advanced Manufacturing--Advanced
materials and chemicals, machinery and equipment, electronics
and components, measuring instruments, photonics, optics and
lasers, computer and peripheral equipment. One award was given
to an Emerging Company (under $50 million in revenues) and
one award was given to an Established Company (over $50 million
in revenues).
- The Emerging Advanced Manufacturing Award Recipient is
Micro Dynamics Corporation.
Micro Dynamics offers the most innovative electronics contract
manufacturing solutions and services to meet the needs of
OEM customers who have technically and logistically challenging
product requirements. Tekne judges were impressed with the
company's ability to build over 2,000 different assemblies
for its customers, which go into products that are used
in every industrialized country in the world.
- The Established Advanced Manufacturing Award Recipient
is Entegris. Entegris
is a global market
leader in materials integrity management - with products
that purify, protect and transport the world's foremost
technologies in their processing manufacturing. The company
serves the semiconductor, data storage, life sciences and
fuel cell industries worldwide.
Biotechnology--Agriculture,
environmental, food science and pharmaceuticals. One award
was given to an Emerging Company (under $50 million in revenues)
and one award was given to an Established Company (over $50
million in revenues)
- The Emerging Biotechnology Award Recipient is Celleration.
Celleration is a medical device company
that develops and markets proprietary technology that delivers
ultrasound waves to produce and energized mist of sterile
saline to wound without direct contact.
- The Established Biotechnology Award Recipient is Cargill.
Cargill Animal Nutrition's revolutionary
approach to animal nutrition has significant benefits for
animal health and producer profitability. Tekne judges view
Cargill Animal Nutrition's breakthroughs as an important
innovation for a vital part of Minnesota's economy.
IT, Software, Communications &
Infrastructure--Software, networking, communications,
and wireless equipment and products. One award was given to
an Emerging Company (under $50 million in revenues) and one
award was given to an Established Company (over $50 million
in revenues).
- The Emerging IT, Software, Communications & Infrastructure
Award Recipient is Gearworks.
Gearworks' flagship product, etrace™, is a wireless
and web-based software product for businesses that depend
on dispatched mobile workers. Running on a new generation
of low-cost, application-enabled cell phones, etrace is
allowing companies to monitor and manage their field operations
at the point of delivery.
- The Established IT, Software, Communications & Infrastructure
Award Recipient is Fargo Electronics.
Fargo Electronics is a global leader in the development
of secure technologies for card identity systems, having
more than 100,000 systems in 80 countries worldwide.
Innovation--The Innovation
Award honors a “business, academic institution or business/
academic collaboration” that has demonstrated leadership,
dedication and excellence in the development of an innovation.
This award may be given to innovative or converging products
or services. Examples of convergence include areas such as
digital technology, nanotechnology, MEMS, medtech/biotech,
genomics/bioinformatics or other areas of life sciences research.
This award could also be given to an innovative program or
collaborative partnership. Applicants must demonstrate the
innovation’s potential to contribute significantly to
Minnesota’s technology-based economy. One award was
given to an Emerging Company (under $50 million in revenues)
and one award was given to an Established Company (over $50
million in revenues).
- The Emerging Innovation Award Recipient is Virtual
Radiologic Consultants. Virtual Radiologic
Consultants (VRC)is a teleradiology services company recognized
as a pioneer in the convergence of medical and digital technology.
VRC connects 450 client healthcare institutions nation-wide
with over 50 widely-distributed radiologists in a common,
secure, proprietary network via the largest WAN of its kind
in existence today.
- The Established Innovation Award Recipient is IBM.
To support the mission of the computational biology group
at IBM Research, IBM became committed to developing a supercomputer
capable of calculating at rates approaching 1 petaflop.
At this performance level, the Blue Gene/L supercomputer
has established Minnesota, once again, as the leader in
supercomputing.
Innovation in Teaching--The
Innovation in Teaching Award recognizes excellence in education
by creating exciting learning opportunities for students through
the innovative use of technology. The educator cultivates
experiences in the classroom not possible without technology,
promotes the use and sharing of technology in classrooms to
benefit learning, and expands opportunities for students to
be successful in technology-related careers. One award was
given.
- The Innovation in Teaching Award Recipient is Timothy
Jump from Benilde St. Margaret's School
in St. Louis Park. By basing learning strategies on engineering
models, Tim Jump deduced that he could teach students fundamental
technical skills and prepare students for advanced study
in engineering. This past summer, Jump's Advanced Competitive
Science students competed against graduate-level college
students in the U.S. Open RoboCup. Using robots to navigate
a simulated disaster scene, the students were able to collect,
analyze and provide data to rescue teams that enabled them
to proceed into a disaster area with minimized risk. Under
Jump's leadership, the students won the championship and
represented the United States at the world championships
in Japan.
Leadership--The Leadership
Award honors an outstanding “individual” who,
beyond a specific innovation or achievement, has contributed
significantly to Minnesota’s technology expansion and
sets an example for others to follow. One award was given
to an individual from an Emerging Company (under $50 million
in revenues) and one award was given to an individual from
an Established Company (over $50 million in revenues).
- The Emerging Leadership Award Recipient is Win
Wood, Vice President of Strategic Programs, Micro Dynamics
Corporation. Win Wood has played a vital
role in growing Micro Dynamics from 12 person electronic
design shop to a 450 employee design and electronic manufacturing
services company serving OEMs in the medical, industrial,
telecom, computing and military/aerospace markets. Wood
led efforts to bring a strong customer-focused approach
to Micro Dynamics that has led to a 10 year compound annual
growth rate of 22% and has consistently promoted a company
environment that encourages hard work and fun.
- The Established Leadership Award Recipient is Janet
Dolan , President and CEO, Tennant Company.
Janet Dolan provides strong leadership both in her role
as president and CEO of Tennant Company as well as in the
broader community. Whether advocating for legislative issues
or working side-by-side with production employees, Dolan
contributes to the generation and discussion of new ideas,
delivers positive encouragement and leadership to her employees
and personally commits to leading by example.
Medical Technology--Devices,
diagnostics and equipment. One award was given to an Emerging
Company (under $50 million in revenues) and one award was
given to an Established Company (over $50 million in revenues).
- The Emerging Medical Technology Award Recipient is Vital
Images . Vital Images develops and markets
advanced visualization and analysis software solutions for
the healthcare market, with a primary focus on cardiovascular
disease and cancer. Vitrea® 2 software that creates
2D, 3D and 4D anatomical images that help diagnose conditions
more accurately, plan surgery less invasively, and screen
for certain cancers and hear disease at an early, more treatable
stage.
- The Established Medical Technology Award Recipient is
SurModics. SurModics is a leading provider
of surface modification technologies for the healthcare
industry. InnoRx® Sustained Release System combines
SurModics' drug delivery polymer coating technology with
a non-biodegradable implantable coil for use with a variety
of drugs.
Technology Services--Innovative

processes. One award was given to an Emerging Company (under
$50 million in revenues) and one award was given to an Established
Company (over $50 million in revenues).
- The Emerging Technology Services Award Recipient is Magenic
Technologies . Magenic is a Microsoft-focused
custom application development firm whose core competency
is designing, building and supporting applications throughout
their entire lifecycle. Magenic works collaboratively with
its customers and their solutions approach allows Magenic
to perform shared-risk projects for its customers, ensuring
that they achieve optimal results. Magenic has developed
solutions to meet business and technology challenges for
over 180 leading Minnesota companies.
- The Established Technology Services Award Recipient is
Ingenix. Ingenix's
pharmaceutical solutions business has created i3 Aperio,
a registry of drug experiences of more than 11 million people
that may ultimately help physicians write prescriptions
with great confidence, and allow consumers to take new medications
with added comfort and security.
Technology User--Innovative
application of products or services resulting in dramatic
business improvement or market advantage. One award was given
to an Emerging Company (under $50 million in revenues) and
one award was given to an Established Company (over $50 million
in revenues).
- The Emerging Technology User Award Recipient is
WindLogics. WindLogics, a world leader in
atmospheric modeling and analysis, has developed innovative
methodologies for assessing long-term financial risk associated
with wind energy development. Through their benchmark technology
and scientific resources, WindLogics delivers high quality,
detailed and reliable analyses in weeks - significantly
faster than the industry's traditional methods.
- The Established Technology User Award Recipient is Honeywell.
Honeywell's vision with the PRO family of thermostats was
to produce revolutionary products that would completely
meet end-user needs and establish Honeywell's capabilities
as a manufacturer of innovative high performance thermostats.
Tekne judges viewed the revamping of a core product from
a "Minnesota icon" as a major success.
